, FREE PRESS ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT REPORTERFour impressive shows have won spots on the Impresario Performance list at the 2006 London Fringe Theatre Festival. The entries, which have generated the top attendance figures and "popular momentum" at their respective venues, are Oscar, Emily and the Giant; The Black Roses Foundation Tour 2006; Darcy & Elizabeth; and Am Dilemma. Directed by London theatre veteran Don Fleckser, Oscar, Emily and the Giant is a family-oriented musical chronicling young Oscar Wilde's struggles to rescue his sister Emily from the mean grasp of a selfish giant. The Pretentious Theatre offering was penned by Joshua Richardson and produced by Stephanie Demas, the team behind P & J: The Original Mock Musical, winner of the best production and funniest show prizes at last year's Fringe. (Impresario Performance: Spriet Family Theatre, Sunday, 9 p.m.) * * * The Black Roses Foundation Tour, scripted and staged by Chelsea P. Manders and London native Hayley Gratto, is an hour packed with biting social satire and raunchy, raucous songs. The show, starring "Canada's own nefarious folk duo," arrived in London after its successful stays at fringe festivals in Toronto and Montreal. (The Arts Project, Sunday, 8:30 p.m.) * * * Darcy & Elizabeth is another local entry on the elite list. Presented by the Regency Players, this is Londoner Marion Johnson's contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. Rod Keith and Martha Zimmerman portray the title roles in the play, which boasts "treachery, seduction and outrageous fun." (Wolf Performance Hall, Sunday, 7 p.m.) * * * The single imported Impresario winner, Am Dilemma, is written and performed by Justin McGinley of Melbourne, Australia. Subtitled A Minor Dilemma, his short (35-minute) production blends music, physical comedy and circus elements "to create a unique evening of romance." (Fanshawe College Theatre, Sunday, 7:30 p.m.) Each Impresario selection will have an extra performance at its venue on Sunday, the festival's final day. Admission to those shows is $9 (plus $2 service charge for patrons using Visa, Mastercard or debit cards) and all box-office receipts will be divided evenly among the theatre troupes and the festival. Advance tickets can be purchased, beginning at 11 a.m. today, at London Fringe headquarters, 210 Dundas St. (corner of Clarence).
